A camera geek’s dream

Part I - first outing

If there are two things I do not have, it is time and money. That’s very frustrating. To cheer myself up a little, I bought a Casio EX-F1 (pictured above, photo Casio) and got “out there” for a few relaxing hours. What can I say, the EX-F1 is a camera geek’s dream. Well, almost. There are some shortcomings, one of them was actually quite striking when opening the very first image I had taken. It is affecting one rather central part, the lens:

Chromatic aberration (CA)

You can read about this awkward phenomenon for instance here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration. In short, CA gives you ugly colored blurry streaks mainly around bright areas in an image. Some lenses have more CA, others less, typically toward the image borders. The EX-F1, however, features pronounced CA right in the image center.

The above image is a crop right from the center of an image taken with the EX-F1. Sure enough, it is the obligatory flower image. To my excuse, there isn’t much else here in Norway to take images off right now. It is early spring as exciting as it gets. Well, can you see the CA in the photograph? Fortunately, the image can be corrected in post-processing, for example in Adobe Photoshop or similiar programs. But that is cumbersome and very boring. The amount of CA in the EX-F1 images is somewhat disappointing.

Got around testing the 60 fps feature today too, more on this in the context of wildlife photography later, also on movie recording. The Casio EX-F1 really has loads of features to hold forth and problems to complain about.

Stay tuned!
